Comparative – Üstünlük: — İki şeyin mukayese­sinde kullanılan ilk dereceyi teşkil eder:

high — yüksek: higher — daha yüksek.

Kayışdağı is higher than Çamlıca: Kayışdağı Çam- lıcadan yüksektir-

(Gördüğünüz gibi, iki şeyin mukayesesinde biri­nin diğerinden daha üstün olduğunu anlatır.)

Superlative — En üstünlük: — İkiden fazla şey arasında en üstünü anlatmak için kullanılır.

Ağrı dağı is the highest mountain of Turkey: Ağrı dağı Türkiyenin en yüksek dağıdır, (yani bütün Tür­kiye dağlarının içinde en yükseği).

Eğer sıfatlar sesli bir harfi takip eden (y) ile biterse, o zaman: Üstünlük; (y) kaldırıp yerine (ier) getirilerek yapılır: pretty – prettier. En üstünlüğe (y) kaldırılıp yerine (iest) konur: pretty – prettiest.
